Take What You Need Tuesday Dry Brushing 101: What Is It and Why Are People Obsessed With It?

If you’ve spent any time in the wellness world, you’ve probably heard people talk about dry brushing. But what exactly is it, and why has it become one of my personal self-care favorites?

Dry brushing is a simple practice that involves using a firm, natural-bristle brush on dry skin before showering. The brush is gently swept across the body using upward motions, creating a light exfoliation for the skin.

Benefits of Dry Brushing

✨ Helps remove dead skin cells and dry, flaky skin.

✨ Supports smoother, softer, and brighter-looking skin.

✨ Helps skincare products absorb better after showering.

✨ Can support healthy skin turnover when used consistently.

✨ Turns an everyday shower into a simple self-care ritual.

From Me to You

I have to say, dry brushing has become one of my favorites. I’ve personally seen results, but I will also be honest and say that consistency matters.

When I was heavier, I noticed some areas of my body, like my inner thighs and underarms, became darker over time. I started incorporating dry brushing into my routine and noticed that when I stayed consistent, I could see improvements in the appearance of those areas.

Everyone’s skin is different, and there’s no overnight fix, but finding a routine that works for you and sticking with it can make a difference. For me, dry brushing became less about perfection and more about creating healthy habits and taking time to care for myself.

How to Dry Brush Properly

• Start with completely dry skin before showering.

• Use gentle upward strokes toward the heart.

• Avoid scrubbing too hard. Dry brushing should never be painful.

• Pay extra attention to rough areas like elbows, knees, heels, and other areas where dead skin tends to build up.

• Shower afterward and follow with your favorite moisturizer or body oil.

A Few Things to Remember

Dry brushing should not be used on broken skin, active rashes, cuts, or irritated areas. And while it may help improve the appearance of uneven skin tone over time, consistency and patience are key.

Healthy skin isn’t about perfection. It’s about caring for yourself little by little and creating routines that make you feel good.
